Perceptual Learning, Cognition, and Expertise

چکیده
Recent research indicates that perceptual learning (PL)—experience-induced changes in the way perceivers extract information—plays a larger role in complex cognitive tasks, including abstract and symbolic domains, than has been understood in theory or implemented in instruction. Here, we describe the involvement of PL in complex cognitive tasks and why these connections, along with contemporary experimental and neuroscientific research in perception, challenge widely held accounts of the relation ships among perception, cognition, and learning. We outline three revisions to common assumptions about these relations: 1) Perceptual mechanisms provide complex and abstract descriptions of reality; 2) Perceptual representations are often

Problem-Based and Lecture-Based Methods Compared: The Mediating Role of Perceptual Control and Value Cognition
It is necessary to clarify factors affecting student emotions as they play an important role in their learning. Among such factors teaching method looms large, and given the variety of methods used, a comparison of these methods in terms of their relation to things like perceptual control and value cognition, can lead to a better choice in regards to helping the students learn better....
متن کاملCognitive Aspects of Teacher Expertise in ELT
The present paper seeks to investigate the cognitive abilities of expert EFL teachers. To this aim, the existing literature was examined and ten cognitive themes were derived which were further investigated through interviews conducted with ten academics, teacher trainers and exemplary teachers of the field in the Iranian context. The ten extracted themes were attested by interviewees’ comments...
متن کاملPerceptual and conceptual training mediate the verbal overshadowing effect in an unfamiliar domain.
Describing memory for a nonverbal perceptual stimulus can impair recognition. This verbal overshadowing effect may occur when perceptual expertise exceeds verbal expertise, but previous evidence for this hypothesis has been strictly correlational. We conducted two experiments, exploring the relation between expertise and verbal overshadowing by manipulating perceptual and conceptual knowledge. ...
متن کاملVisual prediction and perceptual expertise.
Making accurate predictions about what may happen in the environment requires analogies between perceptual input and associations in memory. These elements of predictions are based on cortical representations, but little is known about how these processes can be enhanced by experience and training. On the other hand, studies on perceptual expertise have revealed that the acquisition of expertis...
متن کاملThe neural circuitry of expertise: perceptual learning and social cognition
Amongst the most significant questions we are confronted with today include the integration of the brain's micro-circuitry, our ability to build the complex social networks that underpin society and how our society impacts on our ecological environment. In trying to unravel these issues one place to begin is at the level of the individual: to consider how we accumulate information about our env...
